Jazz - 1st grade thru Adult.
Jazz dance has an entirely different origin than Ballet and Modern. The social dances surrounding Jazz music originated by black musicians in the early 20th century define early Jazz dancing. When Jazz shifted to the stage in 1920-30, the dances combined social dancing with steps found in vaudeville, minstrel shows and revues. Jazz dancing transformed mid-century and incorporated Ballet, Modern, and Tap styles, and is the familiar Jazz of today. Jazz styles often emphasize isolated body movements and parallel feet, and the sensations of staying grounded and upright.
Hip-Hop - 1st grade thru Adult.
This form of dance grew out of the break dance generation in the 1970's. More than 30 years old hip-hop refers to social or choreographed dance styles primarily danced to hip-hop music. This includes a wide range of styles notably breaking, locking, and popping. What separates hip-hop dance from other forms of dance is that it is often freestyle or improvisational in nature. A lot of movement is grounded and sharp articulation through the body. To some, hip-hop dance may only be a form of entertainment or a hobby. To others it has become a lifestyle: a way to be active in physical fitness or competitive dance and a way to make a living by dancing professionally.
